If you're concerned that your child may have dyslexia, knowing what to expect from an assessment can be reassuring. At SJB Assessments (formerly DITTAS), we provide thorough, supportive dyslexia assessments for families in Bromley, Southeast London, Northeast Kent, and across the UK through remote assessments.

1. Background Information from Parents and School
Before the assessment takes place, parents and school staff complete a detailed background questionnaire. This provides important insight into your child’s developmental history, learning profile, and current difficulties – whether that’s with reading, spelling, writing, attention, memory, or organisation. This helps us tailor the assessment to your child’s needs from the outset.

2. A Calm, Comprehensive Assessment Session
The assessment itself usually lasts between two and three hours and includes regular breaks to keep your child comfortable and focused.
We begin by exploring your child’s underlying cognitive ability through verbal and non-verbal reasoning tasks. We then assess cognitive processing skills such as phonological awareness, working memory, processing speed, and orthographic processing (how your child recognises and remembers word patterns).
Next, we explore reading, spelling, writing, and – where appropriate – numeracy. These standardised tests help us build a clear picture of how your child is performing and where support may be needed.

3. A Detailed Report and Practical Recommendations
Following the assessment, you will receive a comprehensive written report. This outlines your child’s strengths and difficulties, includes a diagnosis (where appropriate), and offers tailored dyslexia support strategies for both home and school.
You’ll also have the option of a Zoom consultation with Sarah to discuss the results and ask any questions.

4. Ongoing Support After the Assessment
At SJB Assessments, we know that support doesn’t stop once the report is delivered. We offer ongoing parental consultations, courses, and – launching soon – a parent membership programme to guide you through the next steps with confidence.
